Burnout!
It's not just in your mind
The mind-immune connection is an established scientific fact. A mind state devoid of meaning and purpose, approaching a sense of irrelevance, coupled with anxiety gives rise to chronic inflammation. It is chronic inflammation which underpins the majority of serious illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, most cancers and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Your body therefore reflects your state of mind as well as the psychosocial influences that prevail.
But … it is prudent to be aware that an inflamed body conspires against you - the mediators of chronic inflammation circulate back into the brain and further aggravate the negative mind state. A vicious negative cycle thus ensues - the mediators of inflammation amplify themselves!
Listening to your body therefore provides invaluable information regarding your life situation - the biopsychosocial space. The insight gleaned from this perspective serves to provide appropriate cues for psychosocial changes as well as for end-organ intervention.
The sensitivity and accuracy of self-perception rests upon your level of self-awareness. Building self-awareness thus becomes the key component for establishing lasting wellness and meaningful longevity.

Very good and informational post Ian. Burnout is an especially serious issue in my business, (Hospitality/Food & Beverage/Culinary). I can't tell you how many times I've gone through this in my career and as you say it is a vicious cycle, and the crash is brutal.
Recognition is the key, (as you say "self awareness" which is the key to recognition), but unfortunately it's often difficult "to see the forest for the trees".
I will be sharing this, especially with others in my industry.
