‘Neuromodulation’ refers to the intervention in which specific areas of the brain are stimulated or suppressed in order to elicit a desired outcome. Conventionally, neuromodulation incorporates direct stimulation of brain areas via the insertion of electrodes. More recently, the application of a focused electromagnetic pulse has been used to achieve a similar outcome. This modality is referred to as TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation).
Several years ago I found myself in a unique situation: I was trained in conventional neuromodulation as a neurosurgeon but I was also involved in clinical and corporate coaching. It was inevitable therefore that I would integrate the two vastly different fields into neuromodulation coaching. This intervention is based on an intrinsic knowledge of the function of key areas of the brain such that enhancement of cognitive and emotional function can be attained through the medium of coaching. Additionally I was able to formulate detailed assessments to assist in diagnostics as well as evaluate the success of the intervention. These components all became integral to the Triangles Model Applications (TMA).
An example of the use of the application is illustrated in the situation of chronic anxiety. The state of chronic anxiety is associated with the production of consistently raised levels of adrenaline and cortisol. This chemical configuration has far reaching negative consequences in regard to wellness, performance and longevity. These include – chronic inflammation which underpins cardiovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s dementia (to name but a few); accelerated aging; compromised cognitive functioning and impaired self-awareness. The seat of anxiety in the brain is situated in the region referred to as the amygdala. The function of three other areas namely reasoning in the pre-frontal cortex, reward and gratification in the nucleus accumbens and empathy-connectivity in the cingulate gyrus, all individually and collectively counteract and suppress the excessive anxiety of the amygdala. This 3:1 ratio approach has been exploited successfully over several years and illustrates one of many neuromodulation interventions based on the TMA.
It becomes obvious that neuromodulation coaching represents a unique modality of intervention in which cognitive and emotional function are optimized, leading directly to the enhancement of wellness, performance and longevity.
